Book production and publishing has changed…a lot

There are so many more options than there used to be. To help you make sense of all the options available today (that weren’t around just a few years ago, Hamish MacDonald has written an article posted on No Media Kings. Not surprisingly, No Media Kings is a strong advocate for keeping control of […]

Georgia Russell: papercut book artist

She works with a scalpel instead of a brush. Her pieces are ethereally beautiful. I’ve never seen anything like the works of Georgia Russell before!

Memoire, 2001-2002
Being a sometimes-maker and sometimes-shreader or books myself, I am just fascinated by what Georgia Russell has done and the style she has developed.

Stamped tissue paper

Technique Tuesday!
White tissue paper can be a really helpful material when you want the paper surrounding a stamped item to almost disappear into the background. By stamping onto white tissue, you can make it look like the image (or text) was stamped directly on the substrate. Why not just stamp it that way […]

Star light, star bright

Make Art Monday!

One of the background papers used for Star light, star bright is covered with stamped tissue paper images. What I really like about this technique is that the edges of the tissue blend right into the paper that they’ve been applied to. This particular piece uses mulitple copies of three different […]

May showcase for the Arts & Design channel

My turn to host, and we have all been busy coming up with projects and posts that are worthy of Springtime! Our theme? May flowers, of course!

Tammy from Jewelry and Beading was recently inspired by watching a butterfly flit from one flower to another. The result? Flying Butterfly & Flower Earrings.

Noreen over at HankeringForYarn has […]

No more teens

My baby turned 20 last weekend…sniff! I will miss having teenagers around. Not that she’s been around much, off at art school.

My “big boy” of 21 is leaving Guatemala today, moving to Green Bay, Wisconsin. He will be married on June 2.

Amazing origami

There’s some pretty amazing stuff out there being done in the name of origami! Some of it is so different from what you’d normally visualize that I decided to gather up a few links for your entertainment!
Joel Cooper’s paper masks
It’s hard to believe that these aren’t cut paper.
Richard Sweeney’s paper tessellations
Maybe these paper sculptures […]

What is a “fascinator”? (And how do I make one?)

According to Corvus Tristus blog, a fascinator is
…a hairpiece, smaller than a hat, larger than a barette, and usually all sorts of fluffy and shiny and otherwise fascinating.

Isn’t that great!? And then she goes on to show us how to make them! Fun stuff:

Creating a digital mixed media collage

Welcome to Technique Tuesday!
Today we’re going to look at the mixed media techniques used to create the digital collage, Stone Lily.

This digital collage was made with steps very similar to a technique that I shared before. Previously, though, most of my work was done using either the overlay or the hardlight blending mode of Photoshop. […]
