Dani is off for Italy!
Poor dear…can you imagine anything more awful than having to spend an entire semester in Italy studying sculpture and oil painting? Poor poor little thing… ;-)

We had quite an adventure getting her out of here yesterday since the whole east coast had a snowstorm! We found out around 9:15 am that her early afternoon flight out of Boston was already cancelled, but DH was able to rebook her on an earlier flight that meant we had to leave like 10 minutes ago…. EEK!! We’ve never driven to the airport so fast in our lives, and in a snowstorm. But we made it. Then the line was way too long for her to even get through on time. If she missed this flight, she’d miss the connection to Rome…etc etc.
Mike very sweetly went up to an attendant who was helping direct foot traffic, and explained the situation. That wonderful woman pulled us right out of the line and took Dani over to another station where she finished the process and checked her luggage! I was floored. Mike and I both thought we’d be making the two-hour round trip again tomorrow.

Bright pink luggage should be easier to spot!
She arrived at Dulles in plenty of time for the late afternoon flight to Rome. If for some reason it got cancelled (which it didn’t), it would have been the airline’s problem to get her a hotel room and rebook her. Whew!
I’m surviving, although I did cry a bit on the way home. She’s going to have such a great time, and I’m so happy for her. In June, Mike and I are going to join her for 10 days just as her semester finishes. She’ll be able to guide us all around to the places she wants to revisit, and we’ll all fly home together!

Kids grow up whether we want them to or not. Even if we want them to there are times we wish they didn’t. My dad said, when he was 80, that you never get over your kids growing up really. I’m finding myself agreeing with him (mine have been gone from home for almost 15 years now!

Ah! the joy of having children doing interesting things in cool places. The visitation possibilities are endless. ;)

You are both so right! I received emails today from both Dani and from the director of her program. Everyone arrived safely and all luggage was accounted for…a minor miracle!

I hope she journals and sketches her way thru the semister, so you have a “real life” idea of her adventures. What a lucky girl!

She’ll be sketching it for sure, and photographing it as well. She’s dynamite with a camera ;-)

So my world traveling Niece is off and running. At least this way I got to see a recent picture of her :-)
Not only is she going to love the Oils and Scuptures….she is going to love the architecture. It will add a whole new dimension to her work!
So do you have room in your luggage for me in June? I would love to lie on my back on the floor of the Sistine Chapel again. And there is that little ice cream shop in Florence……

Wish I did have room for you! I’ll barely have room for any of my own stuff because we have been instructed to come with practically empty suitcases in order to help her cart home all the stuff she makes!! :-)
