Margaret
Make Art Monday
Even though Autumn is way over, I’m still stuck in that mode! One of my favorite poems when I was young was Spring and Fall: to a young child by Gerard Manley Hopkins.

Margaret, are you grieving
Over Goldengrove unleaving?
Leaves, like the things of man, you
With your fresh thoughts care for, can you?
It gets kind of ponderous, but I still always liked it. Maybe it’s because spring and fall have always been my favorite seasons, and here in the New England winter, I look forward to spring so much!
I put this piece together using the image of a little girl in a vintage cabinet card. I did a transfer of her image to fabric, and essentially created a fabric quilt that uses a paper collaged piece as the backing. All the papers and images that went into creating this piece are old…and all have found new life and purpose in my mixed media tribute to Margaret.
I posted a tutorial back in the fall about making paper quilts, and some of the same techniques were used in this piece. Tomorrow, for Technique Tuesday, I’ll share the steps behind creating a mixed paper background like this one.

Very inspiring!! Love the use of poetry as a jumping off place.

Thank you Tammy! I used to pick a poem or quote to go with all my work, but sometimes it feels too forced. When I saw the picture of this pensive little girl though, it just screamed “Margaret” at me :-)
