Mixing digital and physical art
Technique Tuesday!
Materials and Tools:
Decorative papers
Heavy piece of watercolor paper for foundation
Exacto knife, straight edge, and cutting board
Matte medium
Foam brush
Waxed paper
- Create a geometric background by carefully cutting papers and gluing into place on a foundation piece of watercolor paper.
- Cover the piece with waxed paper and weight it until completely dry.
- Scan your piece and make multiple copies in Photoshop (or other image editing software). Store them for future use.
- Open a photograph of an image that you want to use in the digital portion of your collage. Use the selection tools to remove the background completely.
- Drag and drop your image onto the scanned background you’ve created. Add text digitally, or print out your collage and add the text manually.

Even if I can’t do the fancy digital stuff, I can certainly make a background and get it into my computer to print out for backgrounds. Thanks for the lesson.

This is wonder-ful!
I love the distinction you made between physical and digital art.
But, truth be told, at the end of a digital art day, my hips ache from sitting and I can hardly keep my eyes open. It may not be cardio, but it sure is physical!
So I’m searching for another way to describe the difference. 2D Virtual vs. 3D Physical?
