Scrapbook wrap

by Cyndi on February 11th, 2008

Last year my family and I took a wonderful trip to Guatemala to see where Nate, our son/brother had been living and working. We visited the orphanage where he was the schoolmaster and electronics fix-it guy. As it happened, Nate fell in love while he was there, with one of the daughters of the directors, and he married Lizzie last spring. He no longer lives in Guatemala, so I’m really glad that we went to visit while we had the chance. Most of the kids have now been placed into loving homes here in the United States. The wheels turned very slowly, because the home refused to pay the bribes that are expected in the legal system there.

One of the things that I collected while we were there, besides photos, was fabric. Using some of the brightly colored fabrics to fashion a wrap for our scrapbook/photo album seemed like the perfect solution to a dull album cover.

I still haven’t finished the inside of the album, so I can’t complete the wrap quite yet. The album will be a bit thicker when it’s finally done. Once it’s completed, I’ll add some straps to fasten the wrap, and I’ve also got some coins and a few little do-dads that I’ll add to the front.

I love Guatemalan fabrics for their texture and color! My niece adopted two guatemalan brothers. First she adopted one and then two years later she was asked if she could take a new baby brother. How could she say no? My niece is blonde haired and blue eyed but her husband is a darker toned Mexican (a citizen of Mexico-I am not being confusing here). They have one daughter by blood so the whole family melds together wonderfully. It’s so nice when the children can find homes but they thought the process quite difficult.

And getting more difficult all the time thanks to the corruption in selling babies south of the border. At least two of the babies at the orphanage where my son worked were rescued by the police from people on motorcycles heading for the border with newborns! Stolen or sold, they could never determine.
