How to make leather-look felt

Technique Tuesday!
You’re not going to believe how easy it is to do this surface treatment. I’ve asked people to try to figure out what the material is without letting them feel the backside of it, and they always guess leather! Like I said yesterday, it looks a lot more like leather in real life […]

Leather-look felt

Make Art Monday!
A few weeks ago, I showed you a necklace that I made:

A Stitch in Time
The background fabric for this bead-embroidered piece is actually felt. When you see it close up, it looks for all the world like rough leather (moreso in real life than in my picture!). Although I’m not philosophically opposed to […]

Recycle your blankie into a rug!

Can you think of anything cozier than turning soft, cuddly blankets into rugs? What a treat for your feet! Dutch design duo Tejo Remy and Rene VeenHuizen came up with this brilliant idea.

Bugs & Fishes

I love both the stuff and the attitude. Bugs & Fishes is currently planning on blogging every day about the clever projects she makes…felt animals, flowers, mobiles, you name it.
She also sells her wares through an Etsy shop, and one offering that caught my eye was this mobile:

Knitting for dummies…

…me being the dummy, that is!
Sometimes when I’ve finished an intricate and time-consuming project, there’s nothing I like better than watching junk TV and doing dummy knitting. Grab those huge knitting needles and just knit away. Not even any purling, just plain old knitting. At the end of the evening, I’ve got a fun scarf […]

Scrapbook wrap

Last year my family and I took a wonderful trip to Guatemala to see where Nate, our son/brother had been living and working. We visited the orphanage where he was the schoolmaster and electronics fix-it guy. As it happened, Nate fell in love while he was there, with one of the daughters of the directors, […]

Knitting…binary!?!

Well, why not?
For a low-tech art, knitting has become pretty high-tech in the capable hands of Christine Dumoulin.   Binary is a flattened stockinette stitch tube scarf. That translates to extra warm and cozy, no matter what language you decide to knit it in!

Embroidered felt ornaments

I love these ornaments! They have such old-world charm, and are made from the patterns of cookie cutters. Visit Sunshine’s Creations to check out the tutorial.

Color to dye for: Julie Theaker’s tutorial

Technique Tuesday!
I will admit, trying to claim that the word “dye” makes this an appropriate Halloweeny post is really stretching it! But this tutorial is really good…and who knows? Maybe you really want to dye something for your costume?

There’s a great article in Knitty (little purls of wisdom) on how to dye your own yarn. […]
