How do you describe your work, Andie?
My recent work is mostly Artist Trading Cards, Artist Post Cards, and mixed-media canvases. I love photography, painting, and drawing, always trying new techniques and experimenting with new ideas. I use images or photos for inspiration and adapt them to wherever […]

Making an organic collage

Technique Tuesday!
Just like last week, I started with a masonite board as my substrate.

Paint the edges and top of the masonite with black acrylic.
Tear up some large and some small pieces of textured collage papers and foil. The tutorials to make the ones shown in this piece are here and here.
Mix your torn pieces with […]

An organic collage from torn textured papers

Make Art Monday
Last week I showed you the first half of my experiment with the heavily textured collage papers that I made, which was a geometric collage. This week, it’s an organic collage, which emerged when I tore up the papers that were left. This one is called I Sing for Joy:

I Sing […]

Making a geometric collage

Technique Tuesday!

I used a piece of masonite board as the substrate for this collage. I love how strong it is, preventing warping when you’re using heavily manipulated papers like these.

Paint the sides of the board with black acrylic or black gesso.
Choose one of your papers for the background. Cut it to size and adhere it […]

A geometric collage from textured papers

Make Art Monday!
Back in January, I shared a batch of collage papers with you that I made which stressed the textures. They used a limited number of colors so that they’d all work together well in future projects. Well, the time has come! I decided that I wanted to do a bit of an experiment […]

Do you have a skill you’d like to share?

Did you enjoy Chris Tessnear’s tutorial yesterday? I sure did! Even though I’ve been making mixed media art for quite some time, there are always tips and tricks that I learn from other people’s work. Ideas that make me say to myself, “Hmmm…gonna be trying that tomorrow!”
Do you have an idea for […]

Making textured collage papers (part 2)

Technique Tuesday!

This time use a sheet of foil for your background! Wrinkle it and spread it back out without pressing out the wrinkles.
Use Golden’s GAC 100 as the acrylic medium that you mix with your paints. Do not use any water! This will eventually cause the paint to peel away from the foil. Use […]

More textured collage papers

Make Art Monday!
Here are the rest of the papers and such that I painted a few weeks ago, during my busy-little-bee day when I replenished my supply. Tomorrow for Technique Tuesday, the how to’s.

Making textured collage papers (part 1)

Technique Tuesday!

Use a sheet of 140 lb watercolor paper. Apply extra heavy gel medium unevenly with your hands.
Stamp in texture with a large stamp and let dry (or use a heat gun).
Give it a light glaze of Quinacridone Gold acrylic.
Sponge lightly with Permanent Violet Dark, Quinacridone Violet, and Citrine. Repeat with colors as […]

Textured collage papers

Make Art Monday!
One of the true pleasures of being a mixed media artist is when your stash of painted papers begins to run low. No, really…because now you’ve got an excuse to set aside a day and make more! I love to have a lot of papers and fabrics to choose from, and I really […]
